After my Scan ‘N Cut experiment with the last train card didn’t go as well as I would’ve liked, I decided I wanted to have another go at it. So my brother-in-law ended up with two train cards for his birthday. LOL!

This time I went with a Tim Holtz distressed look, using distress oxide inks and the On the Railroad stamp set. I stamped out the train and ticket image onto some 110 lb. white cardstock and diecut them with the Lawn Fawn Stitched Rectangle Stackables. I went around the edges and onto the center of each image with a mixture of pretty much all the brown distress oxide colors. I also added a tiny bit of cracked pistachio to the ticket image. Then I sprayed them with the distress sprayer.

For the paper, I used a paper pad from Hobby Lobby called Uncharted by The Paper Studio. I found the brown ribbon and the pocket watch charm at Hobby Lobby as well.

I didn’t have any sentiments that fit the style I was going for so I searched online for a distressed font. Once I found one I liked, I typed out “happy birthday” in MS Word and printed it onto some 65 lb. white cardstock. Then I used a Lawn Fawn Everyday Sentiment Banner to cut out the sentiment.

I assembled everything onto an A2 cardbase using Tombow Mono Liquid glue and a glue dot for the watch charm.

I’m so much happier with how this card turned out!

My brother-in-law loves model trains, so for his birthday I wanted to make a card that fit the theme.

I really wanted to use my Scan ‘N Cut for this card. I’ve had it for some time, but have only really used it to cut out my stamped images. So this was my first attempt at actually creating an svg file/design.

Being new to this, I started by browsing Etsy for train images. I found some train silhouette svg files (store linked below) that were perfect for creating a clean and simple masculine card. I used the Canvas program by Brother to create the cut file for my card. I used an engine, a car, and a track from the files I purchased, along with the “Happy Birthday” I typed out in Canvas in order to create my design.

I scaled everything down to fit an A2 sized card and added a border. Then I made sure all the characters/images were touching and welded them together so that the whole design cut out as one piece.

I cut the image out of wood grain cardstock to give the design some texture, instead of just plain cardstock. I lined all the edges with a dark brown marker to add some depth as well. Then I glued the cut piece onto another piece of wood grain cardstock, but in a lighter color.

Overall, it was a good learning experience, but I’m not crazy about this card. A block letter font and different papers, maybe layered, would make it a little more interesting. I think it’s a little too simple, but the wheels are already turning for the next one!

Queen has always been one of my favorite bands, along with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, so it was really exciting when the movie Bohemian Rhapsody was released and reignited the excitement surrounding Queen. So much so, that Kindred Stamps turned Freddie into a stamp!

I got this image from the stamp set Rock On and I knew the best place to put him was on a stage. I cut some curtain like shapes out of dark red cardstock and used an embossing stylus to make some lines to resemble folds. I used my Scan ‘N Cut to create the scalloped valance for the top of the curtains, and some gray cardstock for the floor.

I wanted to incorporate one of their popular songs as well as some sort of reveal, so I decided to use a color slider themed around the song Radio GAGA. On the front sliding portion, I drew a radio with micron pens and colored it in with Copic markers.

For the sentiment I stamped “GO GA GA” with Lawn Fawn’s Milo’s ABCs. Once you pull the tab, the whole sentiment is revealed to say “It’s your birthday. Go Ga Ga!” and Freddie can be seen in the spotlight.

I colored up the stamped image with alcohol markers and used distress inks and sponge daubers to create the spotlight and ground. Then, I used some gold foil cardstock elements to add some pizzazz!

ree

Finally, I lined up the ground Freddie was standing on with the ground of the paper pieced stage and popped up the slider on some foam tape.
